Explore Hotel Rio
The Hotel/River House is located directly on the Rio Cangrejal near La Ceiba, Honduras, between two national parks.
The hotel/river house is a full rafting outfit with local internationally accredited guides. There is direct access to the national park by way of a hanging bridge. The land for the visitors center is located in front of the hanging bridge and was donated by the Hotel owners. In addition, trips are available to our 300 acre black pepper and tropical tree farm. We are the only hotel in Central America built using precious tropical hardwoods grown at our tree farm. New rooms have the most comfortable ergonomic beds on the river. The bar and restaurant have incredible views of birds, the water fall and mountains.
The property contains a 1.5km private trail with built in cement steps. The trail goes up a watershed with crystal clear pools, waterfalls, exuberant flora, avifauna, 3 types of toucans, trogons, hawks, eagles, and mot mots. The trail is a loop of intermediate range about 1 hour long descending on another spectacular stream with larger waterfalls, where white face monkeys, jaguarundis and other mammals can be spotted.
We are the pioneers of rafting eco tourism and conservation. The founder, Jose (Pepe) Herrero, brought the first rafting company to the river a little over 20 years ago. He has been one of the leaders of the national conservation movement of the water shed and national parks for 25 years. He is also the original promoter for community oriented adventure and tourism. Pepe is also founder of oldest environmental organization in the country, Fundación Cuero Y Salado, the most important manatee reserve in the region.
All of our staff on the river have an affinity to attend to national and international tourists. The local professional guides will assist you with hiking, rafting, kayaking, and anything else you need.
We cater to scientific academic groups and NGO’s all of whom are granted special treatment and rates. If you are interested contact pepe@hotelrio.info.
